Stanley Chmura, Owner

Stan's Cell Phone Recycling

Recycle Your Used Cell Phones with

Stan’s Cell Phone Recycling

Did you know that...

  • Cell phones thrown in the trash ultimately pose a threat to the environment and public health.

  • Most cell phones can be recycled, therefore avoiding unnecessary waste to our already overburdened landfills.

  • Helps impoverished third world countries, such as Brazil and Panama, where wireless technology is often the only way to stay in touch. Recycled cell phones are affordable for those of modest means.

  • Helps a person with disability start his own business.

Seguin’s Job Developer, Tommy Andersen, sat down to talk to Stanley Chmura about the new small business he is helping Stanley start.

Tommy: Why did this idea of recycling cell phones appeal to you?

Stanley: I have been recycling aluminum cans for years. I would get them from recycling bins in the alleys, parks, forest preserves, and churches after bingo. I would keep them in my garage until I had enough. Then my friend would bring his truck over, and help me bring it to the recycling center, which would pay me cash. Some times I would have 15-20 big garbage bags full of cans. Lately I have had to put the bags on my bike, so I can’t bring that much, it really has slowed down.

Getting used cell phones to recycle, will be cleaner, safer, easier and potentially more money.

Tommy: Why do you want to start your own business?

Stanley: I like the autonomy, independence and flexibility. I can work at my own pace, and at my own time. I get to meet new people and make new friends, something I already do and like. My brother had his own printing business, and I used to work for him, but now I can be in charge of myself.

Tommy: Where do you live?

Stanley: I live in Berwyn, in the house my parents left for me. I have a tenant that lives upstairs.

Tommy: Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

Stanley: I am part of a special 12 step support group. We support one another and respect one another. For all of us have gone through difficult times in life, and we can help each other through. Give me social interaction with people any time, I really like this.

I also like to bike, take trains, public transportation, classical music, opera, watch the weather and an occasional dinner out is enjoyable.

Tommy: Tell me about your education and work experience.

Stanley: I graduated from Webber High School, got an Associates and Arts Degree from Wright College. Then I worked for many years at my brothers printing shop. Most of my experience is as a custodian.

Tommy: What are your hopes for your new small business?

Stanley: I hope to build a good clientele, earn a good income, have good rapport with people and help the environment.

Tommy: Do you have any concerns or fears about you new business?

Stanley: I wonder how the public will respond, will they donate their used cell phones? The response I have received so far have been very positive, many people have promised me their used cell phones, so we’ll see if they come through.

Tommy: Is there any way people can help you in your new business venture?

Stanley: They can donate their used cell phones, and if they have the opportunity to put one of my used cell phones recycling drop boxes at their place of business, that would be great.  I am also very thankful for the help and support Seguin Staff is giving me in starting my own business.
