Understanding Developmental Disabilities
For change to be possible we must understand each other.
A Voice For All: People First
- I am afraid we won't be able to hire you. It seems that you don't fit the qualifications.
- Your child has a disability. Oh, what did you do wrong?
- I don't think it's such a good idea for you to take this class. It might make the real students feel uncomfortable.
- Those people should not eat here, it's disgusting.
These four statements are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to debilitating statements made every day about people with disabilities. If community acceptance and integration is ever to be achieved, statements like this must be eliminated.
How much help can we give? We can help by approaching change with a very open mind, genuine heart, and willingness. We can promote self-advocacy groups like 'People First." Some years ago, Seguin Services established "People First of Cicero." People First chapters operate all over the United States.
People First, started in Oregon in 1974 by a group of individuals with disabilities tired of being treated with little to no respect and dignity. From the beginning, the group was very clear about ending prejudices and restrictions. People First believes that people with handicaps are not handicapped people.
At meetings (open to the public) members develop projects that educate and create opportunities. Everyone can help by inquiring about job placement opportunities, a less restrictive environment (disability accessible) and educating individuals about disability sensitive language.
If we work steadily towards educating and dispelling myths, the day will come when we no longer need to fight and lobby for community acceptance and integration. We will realize that people with disabilities are not outside of the community but within.
